On Jan. 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court made a ruling which legalized abortion. It was a decision that changed the cultural and political landscape of our country forever. Forty-five years later, it is a topic which still powerfully polarizes our society. Thousands march and rally in our nation’s capital in support of and against this decision each January.
In Avoca, there won’t be a march or rally by thousands of people to recognize the 45th anniversary of this ruling, but there will be a group of people gathered at Queen of the Apostles Parish.
On Tuesday, Jan. 23, Queen of the Apostles Parish will hold its annual day of prayer for the legal protection of unborn children. The day will begin with Mass at the church, 715 Hawthorne St., at 8 a.m., followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Throughout the day, the church will be open for private prayer and Eucharistic Adoration. A special Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life will begin at 6:40 p.m. with music meditation, the recitation of the rosary for life, a special pro-life program and benediction.
In other parish news, Queen of the Apostles Parish has Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the church. At present, the parish is in need of a Eucharistic Adorer for the 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. hour. Anyone who can commit to this hour should call Ann Jake at 570-457-3521 or the parish office at 570-457-3412.
Also, due to inclement weather during the winter months, Adoration may be canceled. Please call the parish office for updates on these occasions.
The parish will have its St. Brigid’s Tea at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, in the Queen of the Apostles Parish Hall, 742 Spring St. Refreshment will be served.
The parish announces the following meetings: buildings and grounds committee, 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 29, rectory, and finance council, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 30, rectory.
