PITTSTON — Book lovers will lace up their running shoes next week to support the Pittston Memorial Library with every step.

The Book It Through Pittston 5K Run/Walk returns to Pittston for another go at raising funds for the library with a run through town.

Library Director Patricia Joyce said this year’s race, the library’s second, will support adult literacy programs in honor of Tom and Diane Tigue.

“We felt the need to support our adult literacy program,” Joyce said. “They (the Tigues) were so instrumental in getting the new wing, we just wanted to find a way to honor them.”

Joyce said the library recently launched the adult literacy program, which will offer classes in five topics including basic, information, civic and social, health, and financial literacies. Funds raised from the 5K will benefit programs associated with each branch of adult literacy, like a health fair, computer classes and other efforts.

Joyce said more than 300 people attended the first 5K last year, with 130 people tackling the run. With online registrations, Joyce said this year’s race already has 78 runners as of last week.

“We anticipate a lot more ... This is very well attended by a wide range of ages,” she said. “We get people who have never been to the library before, people who are interested in the 5K part of it.”

Along with raising funds, Joyce said the race raises awareness of the library and the services it offers. She said people who ran last year’s race have started coming to the library more often.

“People have started bringing their kids to storytime because they said they went to the race,” she said.

The race will follow the same route used for the Tomato Festival 5K and the Paint Pittston Pink Color Me Pink 5K. The library will host a reception and awards ceremony in its community room following the race, Joyce said.

Registration costs $30 to run and $15 for the 1-mile walk. Participants can register online or in person starting at 8 a.m. the morning of the race at the Greater Pittston YMCA.

Joyce said she will also complete registrations over the phone for people who call the library.

Participants in the Book It Through Pittston 5K will take their marks at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
