Editor:The Greater Pittston American Veterans Association Post 189 would like to thank the sponsors who gave so generously to their “Sponsor a Veteran Christmas Drive” this December. At the Jan. 18 meeting, Commander Bernie McDonald cheerfully announced the news that because of the success of the campaign, Post 189 can once again fund breakfasts and luncheons for the veterans at the Gino Merli House in Scranton and the VA in Wilkes-Barre, as well as host them as guests at the annual family picnic and 2018 Christmas party.
The businesses and individuals who gave $50 or more to “Sponsor a Vet” and allow this great program to continue were: the Polish Club in Dupont, Kizis-Lokuta Funeral Home-Cas; Colwell-Naegele Associates Inc., Lokuta’s Fuel Service, Cebula’s Bar & Pizza, Kearney Funeral Homes Inc., Dupont Lions Club, VFW Post 4909; Commander Bernie McDonald, Jeff Elia, John and Mark and Andy at Raymour & Flanigan, Ann Marie Paddock, Peggy Grassi, John Philips, Eileen and Edward Slavinski, Ron Casper, in memory of Joseph Casper; Helene Gershey and sons Bob and Tom, Greg and Gretchen Smith, Mike Iacavazzi and Ron Faust.
We salute your gratitude and generosity. May God bless all of you.
Also, a shout out goes to DJ Michael Truszkowski who always donates his music at all of the events, including the AMVETS State Convention last year in Pittsburgh. His only request is that Post 189 make a donation on his behalf to a veterans organization. This year he chose the homeless shelters for veterans in Scranton. Again Mike, a job well done!
Post 189 is looking forward to another stellar year helping our area veterans, educating our youth through the Patriotism Program at the schools, posting colors on commemorative holidays and at community events, serving as honor guards at our fallen and deceased heroes’ funerals, and hosting social activities, and it is all made possible through the sponsors mentioned, the Ladies Auxillary, the members, and the post’s honor guard.
The post meets the third Thursday of the month. Next meeting is at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Polish American Citizen’s Club, Elm St., Dupont. Any veteran is welcome.
