Our friends at the Phoenix Performing Arts Center are once again bringing a bit of Broadway to Main Street when they present the Tony Award-winning musical “Gypsy” beginning this weekend! Performances will take place at 8 p.m. Saturdays, Aug. 5 and Aug. 12; 2 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 6 and Aug. 13, and at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the center, 409 Main St.

Tickets, which are $12, can be purchased by calling the box office at 570-457-3589. Please note if anyone in your party needs handicap seating. There is no special kids seating for this production.

The production is led by Lee LaChette, director/choreographer; Jenn Johnson, musical director, and Jezabelle Von Jane, burlesque mentor.

National Night Out

The Duryea, Avoca and Dupont National Night Out will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Healey Memorial Park, Foote Avenue and Wright Street.

Just a few of the festivities include a rock climbing wall, live taser demonstration, bounce house, fire and police demonstrations, smoke house, Life Flight, food, refreshments and much more. The event is free to the public. Come enjoy a day of fun and get to know your local police officers.

Sewer Authority meeting

Duryea Borough Sewer Authority will have its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the municipal building, 315 Main St.

Betterment meeting

Duryea Betterment Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St.

The Christmas Stroll will be discussed at this time. Anyone who is interested in being on the Stroll committee is encouraged to attend.

Taxes mailed

Martin Hanczyc, Duryea Borough tax collector, announces the county/borough taxes are now being collected at discount value.

Office hours during the rebate period will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Duryea Borough Building. Taxes may also be paid by appointment at 79 Main St. by calling 570-457-2482.

Taxes may also be mailed to 79 Main St., Duryea, PA 18642. Please include the entire tax bill and a stamped envelope if return receipt is requested.

Hanczyc also will pick up taxes for anyone with disabilities who calls to make arrangements.

If you haven’t received a tax bill, call 570-457-2482. All residents are responsible to make certain they receive their taxes.

DePrimo golf tourney

The ninth annual 1st. Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a captain and crew tee off at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer, which includes green fees, use of a cart, dinner and awards. Register early at deprimogolf.com to ensure proper shirt size.

All proceeds will benefit the 1st. Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Fund of the Luzerne Foundation.

St. Mary’s news

St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will have Dozynki Blessing of the Harvest at the 9 a.m. Mass Sunday, Aug. 13, at the church, 200 Stephenson St., in anticipation of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Everyone is invited to bring flowers, herbs and vegetables from their gardens or that they purchased at the store to give thanks to God for the goodness of his earth.

St. Mary’s also will have a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the church. Participants can rent an 8-by-2 foot space for $10, where they can place their own table to sell unwanted treasures. Vendors and crafters are welcome. There also will be food and beverages for sale, as well as a bake sale and door prize. To reserve a table space, call 570-457-2291.

Little League World Series bus trip

American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585, in conjunction with Auxiliary 585 and the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 585, is hosting its seventh annual bus trip to the Little League World Series on Thursday, Aug. 24, in Williamsport.

The trip is free to the public. Children ages 7 to 17 must have a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian. The slips are available at the post, 329 Main St.

Refreshments, hoagies and snacks will be served. To register, call 570-457-4242 by Sunday, Aug. 20.

Duryea H.S., Class of ’57

Duryea High School, Class of 1957, will have its 60th reunion at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Fox Hill Country Club, Exeter. Any classmate who has any questions regarding the meeting or reunion may call Lois Winn Balchune at 570-457-9401.

Recovery meetings

SMART Recovery’s Bi-Weekly Support Group meets from 5:45 to 7 p.m. the first and third Monday of the month at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Hall, (formerly Sacred Heart Hall), 529 Stephenson St. Duryea.

SMART Recovery helps people recover from all types of substance use disorders, or any unwanted behaviors. This includes alcohol/drugs, prescription drugs, nicotine, co-dependency, compulsive overeating or any behavior change. For information, visit facebook.com/smartnepa or www.smartrecovery.org.

Al-Anon meets at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Brick United Methodist Church, 935 Foote Ave. This is an anonymous 12-step program of recovery for families and friends of addicts and alcoholics. There are no dues or fees. Meetings last approximately one hour. The public is invited.
