Following a recent visit to Main Street’s Breznay Family Chiropractic, I read an interesting article about the impact texting has on our necks and spines And, let me just tell you, it is not pretty.

According to the article on www.spinehealth.com, the angle at which many people – particularly teenagers – hold their heads while texting puts six times more pressure on the neck than is was created to withstand. The article states “the weight of the head is a key factor. The neck muscles are meant to support the weight of the head in a neutral position – 10 to 12 pounds. However, many people look down at a 60-degree angle when texting on their phones, which places 60 pounds of force on their neck.”

So what can we do to help alleviate some of these problems? Spinehealth.com suggests we can keep the phone at eye level to avoid bending our necks forward as well as frequently stretching, arching and exercising its muscles. One of its other suggestions is to take frequent breaks.

If taking a break seems like a good idea to you, why not take it right here in town where you can still communicate with friends and have fun at one of the many activities going on here in Avoca?
