This week, we have some really great news about a local resident — someone extremely involved in the community who was recently honored and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

Hughestown Lions Club honored President Steve Golya on March 14, with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest form of recognition that a Lion can receive for charitable work in their community. The Hughestown Lions Club would like to congratulate Steve and thank him for all he has done for the club and our community.

I would also like to congratulate Steve and thank him for all the work he does for Hughestown. Thank you, Steve, for all that you do for Hughestown. You are an absolute inspiration!

Now, here’s what’s going on in Hughestown so you can get involved, too:

Hose company fish fry

and clam chowder sale

The annual Hughestown Hose Company Good Friday Fish Fry will take place at the fire station banquet room Friday, March 30. The dinner will start at noon, with the last seating at 8 p.m.

The annual dinner features the freshest fried fish in a secret beer batter recipe, served with hand cut fries, homemade coleslaw, and a secret recipe tartar sauce. Freshly made pizza will be available by the slice or for $10 a try for anyone interested.

Tickets are $10 for adults and children, but children under 5 years old eat for free. Delivery is available between Moosic and Plains.

The hose company hopes to see you there!

The Hughestown Hose Company also is selling homemade clam chowder from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday. Call 570-654-4188 to order ahead.

The soup sale is open to everyone.

St. Peter’s nut and poppy seed roll sale

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church’s nut and poppy seed rolls pickup date is Wednesday, March 28, for those who already placed orders.

Council news

Council reminds residents that spring is a time to clean up our properties.

Letters will be sent to those not doing their part. Anyone with properties not in compliance will receive a letter.

Anyone with information on unkempt properties is asked to call the borough building and leave a message with the information.

Council sends its sympathy to the Kuluk family.

Easter egg hunt

The Hughestown Easter egg hunt will be held at noon Saturday, March 31, at the Hughestown Hose Company, 30 Center St.

There will be activities for the kids, prizes and candy. Two bicycles also will be raffled off.

The community is invited to attend!

Hose company report

Hughestown Hose Company reported the following incidents in February: two activated fire alarms, one cancellation en route, one code enforcement, 29 emergency medical calls, four investigations, two motor vehicle accidents, two public assists, and one structure fire.

Police report

Hughestown Police report the following incidents in February: one motor vehicle accident, one drug incident, four alarms, one citation, one arrest, and a total 65 calls for the month. There were no DUIs, domestic disputes, or incidents of criminal mischief in February.

Crime Watch news

The next Crime Watch meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the Hughestown Hose Company.

All residents are encouraged to attend and new members are always welcome.
