Autumn is officially here, and with the arrival of the season comes the fall foliage. The leaves in the area have begun changing color, the air has gotten cooler, and the leaves are beginning to fall. That means it’s time to get out those rakes, make a big leaf pile and jump right in!

However, for those who wish to get rid of the leaves, Pittston Twp. will have a leaf pick-up day for its residents. The leaf collection will held Tuesday, Nov. 14 and Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Tuesday, Nov. 14, leaves will be collected from Upper and Lower Browntown, Cork Lane, including Tedrick and Market streets, just west of the Pittston By-Pass; Stauffer Heights, Center Street, Laurel Street, Doty Street, Mill Street, Horizon Estates and Stauffer Pointe.

Wednesday, Nov. 15, collections will be conducted in Butler Heights, Route 315, Suscon, Pocono Ridge Estates, Houston City, Glendale, Route 502 and Quail Hill.

All leaves must be in containers or in paper bags. For information, contact the Pittston Twp. Municipal Building at 570-654-0161.

Jenkins Halloween party

Jenkins Twp. is hosting a Halloween party for all the children of the municipality. The party is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Jenkins Twp. Municipal Building, 46½ Main St., Inkerman.

Food and refreshments will be available for all those who attend. There also will be prizes for funniest, scariest, most original, ugliest and cutest costumes.

Pittston Twp. Halloween party

The Pittston Twp. Halloween party is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William St., Pittston. All children from Pittston Twp. are invited, from infant up to age 12.

There will be a costume contest for all the kids and food and beverages will be available to all who attend. For information, please contact the municipal building at 570-654-0161.

Jenkins sewer projects

Jenkins Twp. sewer line replacement on Fordham Road, Fairfield Road and Old Mill Road is set to begin Monday, Oct. 23.

The contractor in charge of the line replacement will notify any homeowners who may be impacted.

Pittston Twp. Crime Watch

Pittston Twp. Crime Watch Group has cancelled its October meeting and will no longer be meeting on a monthly basis.

Those interested in the group can still stay current on the group’s activities and happenings in the community through social media. The Pittston Twp. Crime Watch Facebook page has 345 people following it. To build on this interest, Frank Sciabacucchi is going to try and expand on the group’s social media presence. He also spoke with Crime Watch officials from neighboring towns and is trying to form a Crime Watch Alliance.

Pittston Twp. Crime Watch still hopes to hold meetings from time to time. They just no longer will be on a monthly basis. The frequency of the meetings has not been determined.

Pittston Twp. meeting

The monthly meeting of the Pittston Twp. Supervisors is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at the municipal building, 421 Broad St.

Leash requirement

Pittston Twp. wishes to remind its residents to always have dogs on a leash and to not leave any waste on any street, sidewalk, passageway, park or any other public area where people congregate, or on any private property.

The dog owner must immediately pick up, remove and dispose of any waste in a sanitary manner.

Jenkins alarm ordinance

Jenkins Twp. wishes to remind its residents of an old ordinance, originally adopted by the township supervisors in 1994. Commonly referred to as the “Alarm Ordinance,” the rule requires any Jenkins Twp. resident who has a burglar or fire alarm installed in their home or who has a home with a pre-existing alarm to register the alarm with the township. A $20 fee is due prior to installation, as well as a $20 yearly fee.

The township announced the fee for the 2017-18 year is due now. This year’s permit runs through June 30, 2018.

Hose company fund drive

Jenkins Twp. Volunteer Hose Company is conducting its 2017-18 fund drive. Approximately 70 percent of the operating budget is supported by donations from the residents of Jenkins Twp. and Yatesville Borough, as well as from local businesses. It is through these donations the hose company is able to continue operating.

If you haven’t received a mailer yet, please contact the hose company at 570-655-5045 and leave your name and address.

School taxes

The 2017 Pittston Area school tax bills are now at face value until Nov. 26. The county and municipal taxes are now at penalty value until Dec. 29.

The Jenkins Twp. tax office will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. The tax office is now at the Jenkins Twp. Municipal Building, 46½ Main St., Inkerman. If these hours are an inconvenience, appointments can be made by calling Jenkins Twp. Tax Collector Jean Mudlock at 570-654-9710.

Pittston Twp. Tax Collector Rita Timonte can be contacted at her home office, 12 E. Oak St., or 570-654-8807. Office hours are scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays.

Payments can be sent anytime in the mail. Postmark will be accepted as the payment date. If a receipt is required, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with payment to the tax office. If you are a new property owner and have not received your bill or if you received a bill in error, please contact the tax collector.

Jenkins yard waste

Jenkins Twp. reminds all residents to put their yard waste in the appropriate containers. Yard waste containers can be similar to the Jenkins Twp. recycling containers. The containers must have perforations in the bottom, handles on each side and cannot have a lid on the top. The cans also cannot be on wheels or exceed 20 gallons. Filled containers cannot weigh more than 30 pounds.

These regulations are in place for workers’ safety.

If you have an excessive amount of yard waste or are cleaning a large area to remove small branches, shrubbery clippings, etc. and need to fill a pickup truck, the Jenkins Twp. Department of Public Works will assist with compost preparation. Call the township building at 570-654-3315 for scheduling.

Pittston Twp. yard waste

Pittston Twp. residents are reminded in order for yard waste to be picked up, you must call the office the day before the scheduled collection.

Yard waste will be picked up the first and third Tuesday of each month, until the end of October, from residents of Upper and Lower Browntown, Cork Lane, including Tedrick and Market streets west of the bypass; Stauffer Heights, Center Street, Laurel Street, Doty Street, Mill Street, Horizon Estates and Stauffer Pointe.

The second and fourth Tuesday of each month, collection will be for residents of Butler Heights and Route 315, Suscon, Pocono Ridge Estates, Houston City, Glendale, Route 502 and Quail Hill.

Yard waste must be in containers which do not weigh more than 30 pounds. Do not use plastic bags or the yard waste will not be picked up. Paper bags can be used.

Yard waste consists of only grass, leaves and garden debris. Tree branches must be bundled and tied and be no longer than 6 inches in diameter and no longer than 6 feet in length.

The following cannot be picked up: rocks, concrete, stone, tree stumps, lumber, plastics, plastic bags and ashes.

Jenkins Twp. Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Jenkins Twp. Municipal Building, 46½ Main St, Inkerman.

Jenkins Twp. Seniors

Meetings of the Jenkins Twp. Senior Citizens Organization are held the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions. The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Jenkins Twp. Hose Company, 2 Second St. New members are welcome.
