John A. Yakobitis Sr. is celebrating his 90th birthday Jan. 27. He resides with his wife, Helen Brown Yakobitis, in West Pittston. They have been blessed with six sons: John Jr. and Lisa, Duryea; Raymond, West Pittston; Ronald, home; Gerard, West Pittston; Kenneth and Mary Beth, Pittston. A son, Kevin, lost his young life to leukemia at the age of 9 in 1969, and recently, daughter-in-law Josette Yakobitis lost her battle with her illness. John has been blessed with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are John Yakobitis III, Mill City; Nicole Rubino, Philadelphia; Faith Yakobitis, Pittston; Amanda Yakobitis, Harrisburg; Andrew Yakobitis, home; Kendra Yakobitis, home and Michael Yakobitis, home. His great-grandchildren are Violet Yakobitis and brother Everret William, of Mill City.
John and Helen celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary Sept. 16, 2017.
He has been retired a number of years and enjoys gardening, watching NCAA basketball games and is a “closet fan” of the New York Yankees.
To celebrate this milestone achievement, a family dinner and birthday celebration will be held at the Tipsy Turtle Restaurant, Avoca.
