Members of the Knights of Lithuania Council 143, Pittston, recently welcomed two visitors from Lithuania, Augustinas Žemaitis and his wife, Aiste Žemaitiene. They area visiting the northeastern United States to gather information on Lithuanian Americans for their website, True Lithuania. The couple visited more than 100 Lithuania-related locations, including churches, cemeteries and Lithuanian buildings in 10 states and Washington, D.C. During these visits, they took pictures and met local Lithuanians who could tell stories of their heritage. They will compile this data to build an interactive map on the website. The Facebook page describing their trip is at www.facebook.com/truelithuania. During their visit to St. Mary’s Villa in Elmhurst, from left, are Don Waxmonsky, Dennis Palladino and Janet Palladino of Knights of Lithuania Council 143; David Kaminski, marketing director of St. Mary’s Villa, and Augustinas and Aiste Žemaitiene. St. Mary’s Villa was founded in the late 1920s by the Rev. Alphonsus Urbanavicius and the Lithuanian nuns of the Poor Sisters of Jesus Crucified in order to assist widows and orphans of deceased coal miners. Today it is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center and personal care home.
